RASPBERRIES - AUTUMN FRUITING
OLD VARIETIES AND AUTUMN FRUITING VARIETIES
All grown to a high standard for health but no certification scheme exists for some of these varieties. They are listed because they are older types and should not be lost to cultivation. If a variety is not Ministry certified, it is best planted in a different area of your garden to the certified stock as these old varieties do not have virus resistance.
MALLING PROMISE
The first raspberry to fruit in early summer. The large, rosy red fruits are excellent for dessert or jam etc. and the canes are abundant and vigorous. A very popular variety that will also thrive in poorer soils. Customers who have grown Promise for years insist on this variety as part of their cropping.
MALLING ORION
Re-introduced by popular request. a heavy cropping mid-season variety with medium sized, firm, round fruits. Excellent flavour.
AUTUMN FRUITING VARIETIES
Fruit from late August until the first frosts, frequently grown as self supporting.
SEPTEMBER
A good crop of firm, quality fruit with superb flavour. Fruits in early September and gives a consistent yield until first frosts. This variety is more tolerant of dry conditions, still producing large, juicy berries.
ZEVA

HERITAGE
One of the heaviest autumn crops with exceptional flavour, vigorous, sturdy canes and the bright red berries are excellent for all purposes. A few days later cropping than the other autumn varieties.

NEW AND RECENT AUTUMN FRUITING RASPBERRIES
Introducing HIMBO TOP - The new August fruiting Raspberry set to outshine Autumn Bliss, its illustrious parent:
Raised in Switzerland from an Autumn Bliss x Queen Cross and with a hefty Royalty charge in place from the breeders, they knew this variety was special - and it is. When you have such a ‘long time best’ variety as Autumn Bliss one is always reluctant to forecast its replacement. But Himbo Top is so superior in virtually every respect it is hard to see it failing in its bid to become the foremost Autumn fruiting Raspberry. The rather large fruits weigh a hugely impressive 6-8g each and are borne on long, strong fruiting laterals … walking along a row of Himbo Top picking your fat succulent berries you will soon end up with more than a bowlful. Sumptuous, mellow, velvety texture, a full 8 week cropping period and a highly impressive total yield. The strong canes are noticeably less spiny than Autumn Bliss and quite upright in habit - quite happy to be clipped back to a space saving single row. Huge sweet fruits, an 8 week picking period, rather high total yield … Himbo Top is the cream of any Raspberry planting programme and a must-have for any Raspberry lover. Highly recommended. First time offered in the UK.
*AUTUMN BLISS
A new, autumn fruiting raspberry, raised by East Malling Research Station. A very heavy cropping variety. It fruits earlier from August to late September with high quality berries and a good flavour. The canes are short, very sturdy and will not normally require support. Autumn Bliss gives more than double the crop of other autumn fruiting types and has good aphid resistance. An interesting variation on growing raspberries is to grow Autumn Bliss in polythene tunnels or under glass. This gives a very prolonged crop. Raspberries for Christmas? All Ministry certified. Very highly recommended.
Introducing POLKA - a new Polish raised Autumn fruiting raspberry which is extremely hardy and consistent
A variety which has already excited considerable interest amongst experts across Europe with its long list of enviable characteristics. The extraordinary long picking season starts up to 10 days earlier than Autumn Bliss yet continues to the same end of season frosts. Larger, brighter and more attractive fruits with a lively true raspberry flavour, high total yield over a very long season, and a rather high percentage of class 1 fruits with virtually no small or mis-shaped berries. The fruits have good lasting qualities and can be stored in the ‘fridge for several days after harvest with little deterioration in flavour and quality’. Very hardy, easily grown and reliable. Will also do well cultivated under polytunnels whereupon the cropping period could easily last until nearly Christmas and with no heat. Brand new first time offered in the UK. Stock limited.

JOAN SQUIRE
Bred by Medway Fruits, Joan Squire is a new Autumn fruiting Raspberry which can be cropped twice during one year. The main picking period is during September, but the lower portion of the overwintered canes will then throw new fruiting growth which crops in early Summer of the following year. The firm fruits are excellent of quality and flavour, although the summer crop is a little smaller. The growth habit is necessarily vigorous to support such intensive cropping but the canes are spine free and easy to handle. The flavour is very good. loan Squire will be a valuable addition to all Home Fruit Growers, but especially as a variety for those short of space; although vigorous, no other Raspberry will produce more fruit per square yard during the course of one year.
