PLUMS

EARLY LAXTON

The earliest plum to ripen. Pleasant dessert flavour and also suitable for cooking. Compact tree. Yellow/red fruits. Pollinate with: Czar, Victoria or Rivers' Early Prolific.

OPAL

A recent introduction that produces early, very high quality plums for dessert, Ready for picking in July, the fruits are red-purple with a fine, juicy flesh and a flavour that is very outstanding. An easy to manage tree that is reliable and one of the heaviest croppers of all. Opal is an excellent new variety that we highly recommend. Large fruits, heavy cropping and the finest flavour of all the early varieties. Pollinate with any of the following: Victoria, Czar, Kirkes Blue, Edwards, Cambridge Gage etc.

HERMAN

New for our lists. A very early plum that is usually ready for picking in late July. The fruits are medium sized, blue-black and free from the stone with ease. The quality is outstanding and the flavour good. Self fertile, no pollinators required.

RIVERS' EARLY PROLIFIC

The purple/blue fruits are ready for picking late July and into August. Good flavour, with a juicy golden flesh that is excellent for all culinary purposes. A compact tree. Pollinate with: Czar, Victoria, Pershore, Valor, Opal or Edwards.

EDNA * NEW *

A Norwegian variety raised by crossing Czar x Peche. An early variety ready in late July, this is a little known but most promising variety The large oval deep blueblack fruits are of excellent quality and have a good dessert flavour but it is the cooked produce of this variety that so impressed us - wonderfully rich and sweet! An excellent choice for an early dual purpose variety. Very hardy. Pollinate with: Victoria, Pershore Yellow, Czar, Opal etc.

BLUE TIT

An early variety with the blue-black yellow fleshed fruits of fine dessert quality which are ready to eat from mid August. Heavy cropping, reliable and self fertile so will crop well on its own. For the heaviest cropping potential pollinate with: Czar, Victoria, Swan, Violetta etc.

SANCTUS HURBERTUS

A new variety from Belgium with larger fruits than the established early variety Early Rivers. The crop is far heavier and the flavour is good. Purple/blue fruits, with a heavy bloom. Excellent for dessert or culinary if you wish. Partially self fertile but as its best if pollinated with: Victoria, Czar etc.

CZAR

August picking. the medium sized fruits are dark purple and oval. The flesh is yellow/green, very juicy with a good acid flavour. A reliable popular cooking plum that is prolific and hardy, bearing a heavy crop. Good frost resistance. The trees are moderately vigorous, upright and self fertile, for no pollinators are needed.

PERSHORE YELLOW

Picking in Mid August, the medium sized oval fruits are golden yellow, with a yellow flesh and moderate flavour. Makes a wonderful jam and cooks and stews very well. A very easy plum to grow. Self fertile, so no pollinators are needed.

PURPLE PERSHORE

Ripening mid to late August, the bluepurple fruits excel for all culinary purposes. The purple fruited selection of Pershore Yellow Egg with all the same excellent cooking qualities. Very easy and heavy cropping. Self fertile.

VIOLETTA * NEW

We are very pleased to introduce this new Swedish raised variety which shows great promise as a perfect variety for the Amateur Gardener. The very attractive dark violet-blue fruits are shaped like Victoria and have a succulent sweet yellow flesh that is delicious for all dessert purposes. The tree itself could he described as the perfect garden tree - naturally spur bearing (which means little pruning), extremely productive and very hardy. The fruits are large and highly uniform quality. Violetta is a superb introduction with a great future. Highly recommended, especially as a partner to the favourite, Victoria, which it precedes in season by 2 weeks. Now proving self fertile

MALLARD

A bright red oval plum with a white bloom, of very fine dessert quality and good sweet flavour; the grade also is even and large. A rather old variety raised in 1885 & still worthy of cultivation today! Pollinate with Marjories, Victoria, Czar, Oullins Gage, kirkes Blue etc. Mid August season.

SWAN

A very old Thomas Rivers introduction from 1897! The round to oval reddish purple fruits ripen mid August and have a good dessert flavour, may also be used for all culinary purposes. A little known but worthwhile cultivar. Popular in the Worcester area. Pollinate with: Czar, Opal etc.

A SUPERB NEW PLUM Introducing ...
JUBILEE

A far superior replacement for Victoria. We would not make such a leading claim were it not without any doubt true. Jubilee is, we believe, finally the variety to take over from Victoria as the finest plum of all. The fruit quality is superb with a much larger size and more uniform quality. The attractive light red colour and succulent yellow flesh hints at the sweet, juicy eating qualities which are perfect for dessert and, like Victoria, also cook and bottle well. It is a very reliable performer with blossom which sets well, excellent disease resistance, and having been raised in Sweden -it is very, very hardy. Very high yielding, a good grower, and ripens just a few days before Victoria. Self fertile - grows and crops well on its own. This is the variety we have all been waiting for. Easy to grow and train. Fine flavour - always reliable – Self fertile. If you would like to be one of the first to grow it, we recommend you order early. We have a limited number of trees available on rootstocks Pixy, St Julian and as Supercolumns. Please add £1.00 extra per tree for this variety.

AVALON

A large dessert plum that ripens late August usually about a week to 10 days earlier than the popular Victoria. The fruits are round oval with a red skin and light bloom. The large fruits have a lovely flavour and are virtually freestone. Yield is slightly less than Victoria but some 70% of the crop is large fruits of very high quality. Avalon will normally be pollinated with Victoria but Edwards and Valor are recommended. Avalon is a superb variety, and well worth a trial planting.

EXCALIBER

A very Large dessert plum of exceptional quality Ripening late August-early September, the round oval fruits have a red-yellow skin with a light bloom. Flavour is good with a crisp juicy texture and the fruits are virtually freestone. Yield has been higher than Victoria with 95% of the total crop in the large high quality grade. Pollinate with Victoria.

MANNS No 1

Very similar to Victoria, but ripening a few days later. A very promising variety., believed to be a selected clone of Victoria. Self fertile.

VICTORIA

For picking late August until early September, the very heavy crop of large, oval, pale red fruits are superbly flavoured. The flesh is yellow/green, sweet and very juicy. An excellent eating plum that also cooks well when slightly under ripe. Self fertile, so if you have room for only one tree, Victoria is an ideal choice. The trees are of moderate growth. No pollinators needed.

BELLE de LOUVAIN

A cooking variety, with large scarlet-red fruits that become almost purple when ripe in August. Vigorous, upright growth, and very heavy cropping. Self fertile, so no pollinators are needed. A very richly flavoured variety

COX’S EMPEROR (Syn Queens Crown)

A historical regal plum re-introduced. Such an eating sensation could not possibly have remained a secret for so long, could it? For this outstanding variety has such an endless list of fine qualities. First it is the huge size of its perfect oval fruits, then it is the beautiful soft yellow skin, just lightly blushed with pink on the sunny side… the succulent juice-dripping golden flesh… quite possibly the finest eating sensation the Plum family has to offer. Partly self fertile and therefore setting a good yield on its own, this huge Plum will have friends and neighbours lining up in disbelief - but don’t let them taste them otherwise you may have none left for yourself! Season late August to September.

REEVES SEEDLING

This variety is often a year or two later before providing a full crop. The flavour, however, is really superb, almost a peach in plum's clothing. The fruits are very large, round and have a good colour. Picking late August-early September. Pollinate with: Victoria, Opal, Edwards, Valor etc.

GIANT PRUNE (Burbanks)

For picking early September. A cooking variety that is red with a purple flesh. Very hardy and heavy cropping, with frost resistance and healthy growth. Often eaten fresh. Self fertile, so no pollinators required.

THE PRESIDENT

A handsome large oval plum of dark purpleblue, the yellow flesh of very fine desert flavour and also well suited to all culinary purposes. Not a heavy cropper but of very fine quality and flavour. Ripens early-mid September. Pollinate with: Victoria, Violletta Valor, Opal etc.

JEFFERSON'S GAGE

The fruits are round, yellowy green, with bronze markings. A gage flavoured plum, with excellent flavour. A moderate, upright growth that is ready for picking in late September. Pollinate with: Denniston's Superb, Warwickshire Drooper, Victoria etc.

KIRKES BLUE

For picking in mid September, the fruits are a beautiful dark purple with a violet bloom, the flesh is juicy with superb flavour. Makes a moderate tree that is very easy to train as a fan where it will excel on a south facing wall. Suitable pollinators: Victoria, Opal, Edwards, Valor etc. easy to grow and quite outstanding

VERITY

A useful, fairly spreading tree amply clothed with branches. The medium sized blue fruits have a slight bloom & a very good sweet flavour. The flesh is a greenish yellow & the fruits ripen from the second half of September and often hang on the tree in a good condition until well into October. They are of sufficiently fine flavour for dessert use but also excel for all Culinary purposes. Partly self fertile but for a full crop pollinate with Victoria, Jubilee, Marjories etc. Re-introduced to our list by popular request!

SEVERN CROSS

For picking late September, an outstanding, regular and heavy cropping variety. The yellow fruits are juicy and large with a very good dessert flavour. An excellent late season variety. Self fertile.

WARWICKSHIRE DROOPER

As the name suggests, a variety with a drooping habit. Very large, yellow plums in mid-late September. A dual purpose plum that is superb for all culinary purposes and can also be eaten for dessert. Attractive habit with cascading branches. Freezes well. Self fertile.

EDWARDS

A recent variety that we introduced a few years ago. Large blue fruits with a violet bloom, heavy cropping and a good flavour. Suitable for dessert and culinary. Edwards is an exceptional variety for mid September fruits. The trees are vigorous in growth. Pollinate with any of the following varieties: Victoria, Opal, Czar, Merryweather, Pershore, Valor, Early Rivers, Cambridge Gage, Kirkes Blue and Avalon.

COE'S GOLDEN DROP

Yellow fruits with red dots on the sunny side. This variety insists on a sheltered position and excels against a wall. A very worthwhile variety with delicious, slightly apricot flavoured fruits. Ideal pollinators: Denniston Superb, Warwickshire Drooper, Victoria etc.

MONARCH

A popular old variety which continues to be sought by those who know it, and introduced to our range by popular request. An oval dark purple plum which ripens from mid September, frequently hanging well into October. Excels for all culinary purposes and considered by some palates to be suitable for dessert too. Self fertile.

GROVES LATE VICTORIA

Similar to the popular variety Victoria but cropping rather later in late September and October. Excellent flavour and a very worthwhile variety. No pollinator required.

MARJORIE'S SEEDLING

For picking late September and into October. The fruits are large, oval and purple blue/black with a yellow, rich, juicy flesh. The fruits hang on the tree well and when fully ripe, are of excellent dessert quality. Superb for all culinary purposes. A very heavy crop is produced on vigorous, upright trees. Cooks extremely well, recommended as a dual purpose, late season plum of very good quality. Self fertile, so no pollinators are needed.
