CORDON PEARS

An excellent way to grow pears is as cordons. The advantages are that they enjoy this more sheltered system of growing where they can freely bask in the sun. They tend to crop earlier and a very wide range of varieties can be grown in a small area. On the new Quince C rootstock they can be planted as close as 2' apart to give a very wide range of fruits to enjoy from September right through to the new year. A row or wall just 15' long can support 7 delicious varieties and pruning is simple with this system. The new, more dwarfing rootstocks have ensured that the sweet, melting flesh of these beautiful home grown fruits is ever growing in popularity. A fully ripened pear, still warm from the sun, a treat no longer just for the few, but to be enjoyed by all.
