GOOSEBERRIES AS 1/2 STANDARDS
These can be planted straight into the open garden with the benefit of picking without bending, and should be supported and grown as you would a standard rose, pruning as you would a gooseberry bush with regards to the shape you require. It makes a very attractive feature for the garden. Standard gooseberries are ideal for growing in containers on your patio etc. Start with a pot 12' in diameter and 12" deep and as the plant grows on, repot into a large pot 14" x 14" etc.Use John Innes potting compost No. 3 or Arthur Bowers soilless and place drainage material (large stone, broken clay pots etc) in the bottom of the pot before planting. During severe winters, the pot would need some protection to protect the roots from very severe frost. An attractive, fruitful addition for even the smallest area.
