APPLES - CORDONS

One of the most productive ways of growing apples and pears is as cordons. These are grown on a single stem with the side branches pruned back a few inches. They should be planted 21/2-3ft in the row and tied to their supporting wires or wall. Pruning is simple and is carried out in the better summer months, and has none of the complications of some of the other intensive systems. They are ideal for the less experienced and the smaller garden, and are probably the most productive of all growing systems. All varieties are available for cordon growing.

Your selection of varieties

Cordons are normally supplied on M9, which is by far the best for the normal garden. If you require M26/106 please mark your order. Prices as above.

MINI M27 CORDONS

These popular mini trees can also be grown as cordons. When grown in this way, there is nothing 'mini' about the crop, just the small area they require to be grown in. Plant 11/2 ft apart for ideal results. Two varieties of apples can then be grown in a space less than 3ft long. The trees will crop earlier than any other type and the fruits produced are larger and perfectly presented. With such a small area required for planting, it is easy to improve your soil so that all gardens can grow M27 apples in this way. When ordering, please ensure you ask for MINI cordons.

THE FRUITING HEDGE

A very productive and attractive screen can be grown using apple trees on M27 rootstock. The trees are planted as upright cordons 2ft apart and pruned to form a continuous hedge, about 6' high and 12-18" thick. In the first few years, the trees are winter pruned, but later, when the hedge has been formed, and the desired height reached, the leader is shortened in mid August and the side laterals pruned back to a fruiting spur. Very simple and very productive. Yield per yard run of the hedge can be very high and, with a combination of varieties, fruit can be produced to cover the full season. A very attractive feature for the garden. The trees required are M27 cordons listed above.
